Catgut

Still wondering, I looked up what the strings of tennis rackets used to be made out of. It turns out that they were traditionally catgut, the intestines of various animals other than cats. More here in this Wipikedia entry.

  • Apparently, 'tennis' (such as it was) was first played by French monks in the 11th century and the 'racquets' were made from human flesh! I'll take cat gut anyday.
